Headlines:

“Playing their e-cards right”

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 2008. This headline was one from the business section that I particularly enjoyed writing. One of the other interns wrote the story also so it was fun to work with her during the editing process and come up with a final product.

“All signs point to football success”
As the University of Missouri geared up for the 2008 football season, the campus and Columbia community had high expectations for the team. The Missourian put together a package about that for the first game of the season, and I wrote this headline to play off of the dominant image.

The “Cave paintings change history” headline on the bottom of the page was also one that I wrote that I liked a lot also. The tight specs coupled with long, scientific words in the story made it tough but I really liked the final product.

Edits (print edits include final designs, all include mark-ups and headlines):

“Fuel rules raise costs, questions”
This was the first story on 1A that I was assigned to edit for the Journal Sentinel. The story involved a lot of technical information and numbers that needed to be checked and verified.

“Highways left in the dark”

This story for the Journal Sentinel involved checking a lot of missing information and also fixing a lot of local terminology and style that hadn’t been right before. As someone who wasn’t from Milwaukee, I ended up using the stylebook a lot for this one.

“Sabathia mania hits Brewer Nation”

This story came to the desk very late. I was asked to do the story because the desk chief had seen that I could turn stories around quickly without losing accuracy or effectiveness. I only had about 20 minutes to turn the story, which was short for a 1A, but I managed to catch several errors, including inconsistencies on the player’s name. With excitement over the Brewers’ playoff chances high, that would have been something the readers would have quickly caught as well.

Edits for Online Publication

“Voter turnout sets records in Missouri”

This story came across the desk at the Missourian shortly after the Nov. 2008 election. The Missourian has collaborative efforts with other J-school media outlets and thus the stories from Jefferson City do not always conform to Missourian style and must go through a lot of editing. This story was no exception. This version was for the Web site, not for print.

“Ameren UE, advocacy agency differ on how to pay for nuclear reactor”

The nuclear reactor the headline references would be located less than 50 miles from Columbia, so this was an important story for mid-Missouri. There was a lot of technical data and jargon, however, so I had to work with the reporter to make it more understandable and make sure that the information was tangible for the readers. This was also the version for the Web.
